The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) have organized their second joint research colloquium. Following the successful introduction of the format at the invitation of the LUH in 2022, this time the BGR hosted the event, at which more than 60 geoscientists from both institutions discussed current research topics of mutual interest.
After a welcome address by the President of the BGR, Prof. Dr. Ralph Watzel, and by the speaker of the Leibniz Research Centre GEO (FZ:GEO) at LUH, Prof. Dr. Monika Sester, Prof. Dr. Stephan Peth from the Institute of Soil Science at LUH gave a presentation on the application of innovative methods of X-ray tomography in soil research. This was followed by another presentation by BGR President Prof. Watzel, who addressed the importance of geoscientific research in the context of current international challenges.
The event focused on more than 20 poster contributions in which young scientists presented joint BGR and LUH projects. These included projects on modern imaging geoscientific analysis methods, new developments for the automatic adaptation of geological maps to changes in scale, geochemical methods for the investigation of plastic particles in the soil and research into the extraction of lithium from the subsurface.
